First of all it depends on the kind of food your dog has been used to since the time she came to you…..
For occasion dogs on a meat diet, bone diet are very fine there isnt a real need to exchange the food… nothing can be best for them than that..
Secondly if you are charitable your dog a formulated food like history it mght be a small hard for your dog to accept the new one…
(be it a normal food or again a formulated food by another brand)
I HAVE THREE DOGS AND 8YRS,2YRS,1YR…MANGAI,SIMBA,NANO..
MANGAI’S DAY STARTS WITH A CUP OF MILK AND HAS BEEN FEEDED WITH MUTTON TWO TIMES A DAY FOR LUNCH AND DINNER AND FEED WITH LITTLE OF PEDIGREE IN THE EVENING ARROUND 5
Simba was at first fed with wheat soup till he was 6 as he was suffering from a CPV attack( dogs has to be given a diet)…. then on he was fed with meat (chicken and mutton) for few months and then history for the last six months…. 2 times a day with a bowl of milk in the morning….
Nano the youngest was fed with milka nd rice till he was 4months ancient untill the day he stole a leg piece from simba’s bowl… then on he is on an alternative meat and history diet…
SIMBA and NANO stay together so they both hav the same kinda diet…..
Note: make it a habbit for your dog to drink a lot of fill up after food…..(add less than a pinch of salt and two pinch of sugar to the fill up)

It’s hard to tell you what to feed your dog, what works for my dog might not work for your dog. I fed Pinnacle and my dog did fantastic on it, I now feed Go of the Wild, it’s a higher rated food than Pinnacle but my dog doesn’t do as well on it, the Bison gives her diarrhea and the other two have caused her to have more dander. So it’s basically what your dog thrives on or does well on that is the food you should feed. But, dogs do like variety, so pick a excellent quality food that comes in different flavors then you can just exchange flavors every so often without upsetting the dogs stomach by changing brands.
Best thing to do is whatever food you consider look it up on http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com and see how it rates. You’d be surprised to find out what garbage a lot of these highly advertised dog foods really are.

It’s excellent she has been on the same food as she isn’t a finicky eater. Let her on what she has been on. No reason to exchange.
I feed Hill’s science diet and it has better effects on my dog’s insightful skin than did the Merrick.
Just since a food is premium doesn’t mean it’s the best for all dogs as each dog is unique in it’s response to foods.

A high quality one!
Not all pet food is made equally. A lot of it is full of corn, by-products, dyes, unhealthy preservatives, filler grains and all sorts of nasty stuff. A lot of pet food companies are perfectly pleased to the dump cheap leftovers and things that aren’t safe for human consumption (from human food processing plants) into their foods. Will it kill your dog? No, it has to be nutritionally complete and safe to even be marketed. Is it healthy? Not by a long shot.
Corn is a low quality ingredient you never want to see in your pet food. Corn and low quality grains are two of the leading culprits when it comes to food allergies in our pets.
Thankfully, there are some brilliant dog foods being made these days that include organic, human grade ingredients rather than gibberish not fit for human consumption.
Examples of low quality foods to avoid: Anything you can find in a grocery store will be low end, Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Royal Canin, History, Kibbles n’ Bits, Beneful, Ol’Roy.
Examples of high quality foods to look for: Innova, Wellness, Levelheaded Gold, Canidae All Life Stages, Fromm Four Star, Merrick, GO Natural, Scenery’s Variety Grassland, Scenery’s Logic, Artemis Original Mix, Timberwolf Organics.
Although the high quality foods are more expensive, you’re getting what you’re paying for. Less filler material and higher quality ingredients means more concentrated nutrients… this means you typically need to feed far less of the high quality food than you would of the low quality one. Which also means less poop!
Seriously on a budget? Two of the most affordable of the higher quality foods would be Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul and Canidae All Life Stages.
Before following your vet’s food recommendation, keep in mind that vets get /very/ small nutritional training during their schooling. Above and further than that, what training they /do/ get is usually sponsored or taught by… you guessed it, the crappy pet food companies! They also often get kickbacks from the companies for pushing these products at their clinics (Science Diet, Royal Canin etc.)
A fantastic option is to go with an entirely grain-free diet. Many of the high quality foods now place out grain-free formulas. Some excellent grain-free diets include: Innova EVO, Wellness CORE, Blue Wilderness, Scenery’s Variety Instinct, Orijen, Horizon Legacy, Canidae Grain Free All Life Stages, Fromm Surf & Turf, Now!, GO Natural Grain Free, Sold Gold Barking At The Moon, Ziwipeak, and Go of the Wild.
Some pretty decent foods can even be found in common pet stores. Petsmart carries Blue Buffalo products (such as the brilliant grain free diet Blue Wilderness). Petco carries Wellness, Levelheaded Gold, Natural Balance, Eagle Pack Holistic Select, Blue Buffalo, Castor & Pollux Organix, Pinnacle, and Halo.
If you can’t find a food, most of the high quality dog food brands have websites with store locators on them that will help you find the store closest to you which supplies their products. Simply type the dog food brand’s name into Google, go to their website, and type your zip code into their store locator.
Another option, if you can’t find anywhere around you that sells excellent foods, is to order your pet food online. Here’s an brilliant place to do so: http://www.petfooddirect.com/store/
Remember that foods should be switched gradually (mixing the new slowly in with the ancient over the period of about week or so), especially when switching to a higher quality one, so as not to upset tummies. For example:
Days 1 & 2: 75% ancient food, 25% new food
Days 3 & 4: 50% ancient food, 50% new food
Days 5 & 6: 25% ancient food, 75% new food
Day 7: 0% ancient food, 100% new food
Another option for feeding dogs is to feed raw. This is something that should be thoroughly researched before being attempted:

http://community.livejournal.com/rawdogs/profile/ (Raw Dogs Livejournal Community, brilliant raw feeding information on the profile page and overall helpful community for raw feeding questions)

Also remember that freefeeding (leaving food down) is the quick lane to canine obesity. Make sure to have scheduled feeding times loosely based on the feeding guidelines on your dog’s food. Adult dogs are typically fed two meals a day.

the best type that agrees with your dogs stomach depends on ur dog you may have to sample and try a few before you can really know.
April 10th, 2011 - 9:36 am
If the dog is healthy on what it’s eating, she doesn’t want or need a exchange. That a human feature, not a dogs.
Stick with what’s she on.
April 10th, 2011 - 9:36 am
the best type is not found in the grocery store. When I can meet the expense of it I feed my dogs Innova!
April 10th, 2011 - 9:36 am
A lot has to do with what she’s been eating and what makes you reckon she wants a exchange. The size of dog she is and how much exercise she gets, her life style. To guess what type of food is excellent for her.
April 10th, 2011 - 9:36 am
if you do switch, make sure that the food doesn’t contain corn, wheat and soy. No use of meat by-products and no use of creature stout.
Science Diet, Iams, Purina, Mighty Dog, History, Eukanuba, Alpo…anything at the grocery store or Walmart isn’t healthy food. The dog will poop more, might have allergic reaction and skin and coat really oilly.
Excellent foods are: Wellness, California Natural, Dogswell Pleased hips or Vitality, Innova, Chicken Soup, Sold Gold, Before Grain, Blue Buffalo and there’s soo much more.
Excellent luck!

I just saw a video that claims that most store brand dog food contain euthanized dogs and cats from vets and pounds. Not sure if it is right, but I don’t really want to find out. They said the safest foods are made by History, Iams, and I reckon Science Diet. Hope this helps.
April 10th, 2011 - 9:36 am
I give my pups science diet pet food since they have stomach issues. This food doesn’t hurt their stomachs and they like it. You can get it in any petsmart or petco.
April 10th, 2011 - 9:36 am
If your dog needs a exchange, it will show. Is her coat dull or sheds excessively? Is her current dog food a very low quality? (purina, kibbles and bits other grocery brand?)
Does it upset her stomach?
If any of the higher than are right, try a high quality holistic or natural food…
Some of the excellent ones are… Wellness, innova, blue buffalo, canidae, etc
some ok ones are nutro natural choice or ultra, pro pac, eukanuba naturally wild.
these foods do not have corn in them which is a filler.
Excellent luck!
